Yesterday my 9 year old son and two of his friends were selling Kool-aid at a corner stand. A middle-aged woman drove up and asked them who they were voting for. (I assume she realizes that 9 year old children cannot vote but who knows) One of the kids said he was voting for Bush and she said, “In that case I cannot buy any Kool-aid from you. You should vote for Kerry.”
When I showed up to pick up my son and he told me the story I thought he was joking. But the lady came back when she saw me at the Kool-aid stand and told me what had happened. She seemed very pleased with herself that she did not give her 50 cents to 9 year old Bush supporters. The funniest part was when she was telling me the story my son’s friend was standing off to the side saying, “Dude! We are so stupid! We should have known by all those stickers on her car to say ‘Kerry’ the first time she came around and then she would have bought some Kool-aid.”
That was my son’s first personal experience with American politics. Now he thinks that people who vote for Kerry are mean. I guess he should consider himself lucky that she didn’t tax their $3 profits. Who would have thought that Kool-aid would be such a divisive issue this year?
